Karen Rupp Obituary – Dr. Karen Ann (Nieman) Rupp, age 42, of Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, and formerly of Shelby County, has passed away on April 14, 2024, at her home. Lt. Col. Rupp was a distinguished Chief of Aerospace Medicine at the 354th Medical Group, Eielson Air Force Base. Her commitment to her country and community was profound and marked by exceptional leadership in Aerospace Medicine Operations, Public Health, and Occupational Medicine.
A Life of Service and Dedication
Born on February 20, 1982, in Greensburg, Karen was the daughter of Paul A. Nieman and Mary Jo (Mauer) Nieman. She married Joseph Abraham “Joe” Rupp on September 10, 2011, who survives her. Together they raised five children, all of whom reside in Alaska. Karen’s siblings, extended family, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive her.
Educational and Professional Achievements
Karen’s academic journey was impressive. After graduating from Waldron High School in 2000, she received a Health Professions Scholarship and went on to earn her Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University School of Medicine in 2009. She completed her medical training with a residency in Aerospace and Family Medicine at Wright State University. Lt. Col. Rupp was double-board certified in family medicine and aerospace medicine, and had recently prepared to become a Squadron Commander.
Contributions to Aerospace Medicine
In her professional career, Karen was stationed first at Shaw AFB in South Carolina and later at Eielson AFB in Alaska. Her roles involved crucial operational missions and patient care, demonstrating her versatility and commitment to service. She was an esteemed educator who trained new flight surgeons and contributed to medical publications.

Karen was an active member of her community, particularly noted for her involvement with the USA Girl Scouts as a volunteer and co-leader. She dedicated many hours to mentoring young scouts through various activities and projects.
Memorial Service Details
Visitation for Lt. Col. Karen Ann Rupp will be held from 4 to 8 PM on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, Shelbyville. The Rosary will be recited at 3:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Friday, April 26, 2024, at 10 AM at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Shelbyville, with Father Mike Keucher officiating. Interment will take place at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Cemetery.
